Day 1 on the Camino de Santiago

We woke up this morning and headed out of St. Jean Pied de Port around 9 am. The first day on the camino happens to  e one of the hardest because you have to cross the Pyrenees mountain range. The pass doesn't necessarily go right over the top but you do ascend  3950 feet during the day so our dogs are barking now.
We ate a simple lunch of sausage, cheese, and bread and.cut it all up with the traditional French knife that Uncle Dave gave us for a wedding present.
Up in the hills it was nice and peaceful. Sheep and horses roamed freely and make a music of sorts as they all had bells around their necks. You could hear herds across the valleys.
We made our descent into Roncevalles through the fog in a forest.
Finally we arrived. 6 euros for a bed in a massive refuge. It appears to be some old cathedral like stone buildings with about 75 bunks in it. Today the pedometer said we took 35,938 steps and we covered 27 km.

  2. Papa & I are sitting here reading this and hahaha, he just broke into song,"Rollin', rollin', rollin', keep them doggies rollin'…". We figured that to cover 500 miles in a month you will have to walk 16.67 miles per day so you're right on target. Good job! Lovin' all the photos!!!! <3

  3. We got on Google Earth and found the spot where the 1st photo in this post was taken. There are moments I love technology and this is one of them. We are assuming that you trekked to Roncesvalles. Is that correct? We thought it would be fun to follow you using Google Earth. So, please post town names!
